(Book 3, Chapters 4-6): Anime Vs. 1984 (No But Really, Just Something I Noticed)

Quote: "There was no physical act, no word spoken aloud, that they had not noticed, no train of thought that they had not been able to infer. Even the speck of whitish dust on the cover of his diary they had carefully replaced. They had played sound-tracks to him, shown him photographs. Some of them were photographs of Julia and himself. Yes, even... He could not fight against the Party any longer. Besides, the Party was in the right. It must be so; how could the immortal, collective brain be mistaken? By what external standard could you check its judgements? Sanity was statistical. It was merely a question of learning to think as they thought." (276-277) What I Have to Say: So I chose this quote specifically because it reminded of an anime I watched a few years back called Psycho Pass . Spoilers ahead in case anyone is interested in watching it. The entire society is basically built on preventing crime through a police force that has the power of "reading peoples...

(Book 3: Chapters 1-3): Integrated Allegiance

Quote: "'Down with Big Brother!’ Yes, I said that! Said it over and over again, it seems. Between you and me, old man, I’m glad they got me before it went any further. Do you know what I’m going to say to them when I go up before the tribunal? ‘Thank you,’ I’m going to say, ‘thank you for saving me before it was too late.'" "Who denounced you?" said Winston. "It was my little daughter," said Parsons with a sort of doleful pride. "She listened at the keyhole. Heard what I was saying, and nipped off to the patrols the very next day. Pretty smart for a nipper of seven, eh? I don’t bear her any grudge for it. In fact I’m proud of her. It shows I brought her up in the right spirit, anyway." (Page 233) What I Have to Say: I chose this quote because it has a few specific aspects that I find very interesting. Here, we get to see just how much the (ignorant) citizens of Oceania are dedicated to the Party, the attitude of the new generation...

(Book 2: Chapters 7-10): Powerless Rulers

Quote: "A Party member lives from birth to death under the eye of the Thought Police. Even when he is alone he can never be sure that he is alone. Wherever he may be, asleep or awake, working or resting, in his bath or in bed, he can be inspected without warning and without knowing that he is being inspected. Nothing that he does is indifferent. His friendships, his relaxations, his behaviour towards his wife and children, the expression of his face when he is alone, the words he mutters in sleep, even the characteristic movements of his body, are all jealously scrutinized... any eccentricity, however small, any change of habits, any nervous mannerism that could possibly be the symptom of an inner struggle, is certain to be detected. He has no freedom of choice in any direction whatever." (210-211) What I Have to Say: It is interesting to see that the reality of Oceania is that the Inner Party members have truly the least amount of freedom out of the three social classe...

Book 2 Chapters 3-6: The Influence of the Party

Quotes: Such a thing as an independent political movement was outside her imagination: and in any case the Party was invincible. It would always exist, and it would always be the same. You could only rebel against it by secret disobedience or, at most, by isolated acts of violence such as killing somebody or blowing something up. (page 152) "I don’t mean confessing. Confession is not betrayal. What you say or do doesn’t matter: only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you—that would be the real betrayal." She thought it over. "They can’t do that," she said finally. "It’s the one thing they can’t do. They can make you say anything—ANYTHING—but they can’t make you believe it. They can’t get inside you." (page 166) What I have to Say: Julia is arguing in the second quote above that people always have power over the Party by simply continuing their own beliefs, but really, she herself is evidence that they can totally "get insid...
